  • Delicious barbecue-style baked beans, made from scratch. Bake them "low and slow," just like your favorite barbecue. Recipe courtesy of Steve Gordon.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb dry navy beans
  • 1 lb ground beef, cooked and drained
  • 1/2 lb bacon, lightly cooked
  • 1 cup onion, diced
  • 1 cup bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cup beef broth
  • 1 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 15 oz tomato sauce (1 15-oz can)
  • 1/2 cup Original Molasses
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp Trappey’s® Red Devil Hot Sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp liquid smoke
  • 1/4 cup yellow mustard
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Directions

  1. Sort through dry beans to remove any stones or hard beans. Place beans in a large pot, cover with water, soak overnight.
  2. Drain beans, place in a large baking pan.
  3. Brown ground beef in a skillet placed over medium heat. Drain off fat.
  4. Add cooked beef to pan with beans. Add onions and bell pepper.
  5. Chop bacon into small pieces. Place bacon in skillet and brown lightly. Add cooked bacon and bacon grease to pan with beans.
  6. Mix in tomato sauce, brown sugar, molasses, mustard, garlic powder, liquid smoke, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce and beef broth. Cover pan tightly with aluminum foil. Place in pre-heated 300 degree oven and bake covered for 3 hours.
  7. Add ketchup. Add salt, if needed. Mix in black pepper.
  8. Return beans, uncovered, back to oven and bake about one hour, or until beans are tender. Serve warm.
